Which outdoor tiles are frost resistant and non-slip?

Accepted Answer

20mm-thick vitrified porcelain paving for patios and 10mm frost-resistant porcelain on a solid bed for balconies and roof terraces, both with a slip rating of R11 or above in a wet, external, barefoot area. Water absorption below 0.5% is the number that matters — a tile that drinks water will spall the first hard frost. Avoid polished finishes, indoor-rated ceramic and unsealed limestone outside.

Can I use the same tile inside and outside for a seamless look?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and it is the single best trick for making a kitchen extension feel twice the size. Most porcelain ranges now offer a 9–10mm indoor tile and a matching 20mm R11 outdoor version in the same colour and pattern. We align the grout joints across the threshold and drop the external level by 10–15mm with a fall away from the building, so the run looks continuous but the drainage still works.

What do you lay outdoor porcelain on?

Accepted Answer

On a full mortar bed over a compacted sub-base with a slurry primer, or on adjustable pedestals over a waterproofed roof terrace. Never on five dabs of adhesive — a hollow spot under external porcelain fills with water, freezes and cracks the tile. Falls are set at a minimum of 1:80 away from the building, with a linear drain or gravel margin where water needs to go somewhere specific.

Do you tile swimming pools, hot tubs and pool surrounds?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Pool tanks and hot tubs get a cementitious waterproofing system, then pool-grade mosaic or porcelain in a full bed with epoxy or pool-specific grout that stands up to chlorine and salt. Surrounds get R11/R12 barefoot-rated porcelain with correct falls to a channel drain, and coved internal angles. We also re-tile waterlines and repair failed grout in existing pools.

How do you stop grout cracking and weeds on a patio?

Accepted Answer

Movement joints every 5–6m and at every perimeter and change of plane, a flexible external grout brushed in fully solid (no voids), and no free-draining sand joint that weeds can colonise. A fully bedded, fully grouted patio has nowhere for seeds to germinate and nowhere for water to sit, which is why it stays looking new far longer than slabs on sand.

Can you tile a balcony or roof terrace that is already waterproofed?

Accepted Answer

Yes — and we protect the existing membrane rather than penetrating it. Pedestal-mounted 20mm porcelain is usually the answer: it sits above the waterproofing, lets water drain freely underneath, keeps the finished level low, and lifts out for inspection later. Where the leaseholder or freeholder needs sign-off we provide the tile and pedestal data for approval first.

What is the best time of year to lay an outdoor patio?

Accepted Answer

March to October is ideal. We do not lay external tiles when the temperature is below 5°C or falling towards freezing overnight, because the adhesive and grout cannot cure and frost damage is immediate and permanent. Winter enquiries are surveyed and booked ahead so you are first in the queue when conditions turn.
